Severe cold waves forecasted in northern India, IMD issues advisory

New Delhi: Indian Meteorological Department had predicted that severe cold wave conditions are likely to prevail in northern parts of India like Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh from December 29 onwards. The maximum temperature forecasted is 3 to 5-degree Celsius after December 28.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an unusual advisory for the people living in these states. In an impact-based advisory, the IMD urged residents of IndiaÂs northernmost states to protect themselves from the biting cold by avoiding alcohol.

What are Cold waves-

A cold wave occurs when the minimum temperature dips to 10 degrees Celsius or less and the departure from normal temperature is 4.5 degrees Celsius or lower. In circumstances of severe cold waves, a departure from normal temperature is 6.5 degrees or lower. So far, the capital has recorded five cold wave days this month.

What does IMD say-

IMD said the weather conditions are likely to increase the risk of contracting illnesses like the flu, and could also lead to symptoms like runny/stuffy nose and nosebleeds, which usually set in or are aggravated due to prolonged exposure to the cold.

The department has also warned of frostbite, a medical condition where the skin turns pale, hard, and numb and is eventually left with black blisters when exposed to extreme cold conditions. ÂDo not ignore shivering, the IMD notice read. ÂIt is the first sign that the body is losing heat. Get indoorsÂ.

To avoid an adverse reaction to the cold wave, the IMD has shared a list of recommendations, out of many one recommendations is to avoid alcohol as it Âreduces your body temperatureÂ. The department also urged people to limit outdoor activities, moisturize their skin regularly with oil or cream, eat vitamin-C rich fruits and vegetables, and drink warm fluids to maintain their body temperature and immunity.

The Western Disturbance will lead to “scattered to fairly widespread” snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. After the wind system withdraws, cold and dry northerly/northwesterly winds from the western Himalayas will bring the minimum temperature in north India. We urge people living in northern India to stay cautious and take care of themselves.
